Because I could not stop for Death
Because I could not stop for Death -
He kindly stopped for me -
The carriage held but just ourselves -
And Immortality.
We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For His Civility.
We passed the Shool where Children strove
At Recess - in the Ring -
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain -
We passed the Setting Sun -
Or rather - He passed Us -
The Dews drew quivering and chill-
For only Gossamer, my Gown -
My Tippet - only Tulle -
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground -
The Roof was scarcely visible -
The Cornice - in the Ground -
Since then - 't is Centuries - and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity -

내가 죽음 때문에 멈출 수 없기에-
죽음이 친절하게도 날 위해 멈춰주네-
수레는, 우리들 자신은 물론-
또 영원을 실었네.
우린 천천히 나갔네-죽음은 서두르지 않았으며
난 죽음의 예의로
고통과 안식도
함께 실어버렸네-
거기-휴식시간에-둥글게 앉아
싸우고 있는 아이들의 학교를 지나-
낟알 가득한 들녘을 지나-
